Look Out, Look After – Section Two: Out and about? Exploring Safely

From the first hike to the final campfire, safety is in every step. Whether it’s a woodland walk, a day-long hike, or just exploring the campsite, it’s important we all take responsibility for keeping each other safe. 

In the second section of our Look Out, Look After campaign, we’re focusing on how to stay safe when you’re out and about with your group. These active adventures can be some of the most rewarding experiences in Scouting—but only when done with care and planning. 

🗺️ Set clear boundaries and supervision plans 

Before setting off, make sure everyone knows what to expect. 

• Pre-Activity Briefing: Take time to brief everyone on the route, expected duration, rest stops, and any potential hazards. Encourage questions and check for understanding. 

• Scout Leaders and Adults: Ensure there’s enough adult supervision, especially if splitting into smaller groups. That way, support is always close by if someone needs it. 

• Emergency Procedures: Share clear instructions on what to do in an emergency, including how to contact emergency services and where to find the nearest help.

👫 Use the buddy system 

One of the simplest ways to keep each other safe is to never go it alone. 

• Pairing Up: Make sure every Scout has a buddy. It’s great for morale and helps ensure no one is left behind. 

• Check-Ins: Buddies should regularly check in with each other—especially in more difficult areas or during rest breaks.

📍 Share your location and route 

Communication is key. 

• Route Planning: Plan your route in advance and leave the details with someone not on the activity. 

• Use of Tech: GPS devices and tracking apps can help leaders stay aware of where their groups are and alert others if needed.

🔢 Carry out regular headcounts and check-ins 

It’s simple but effective. 

• Frequent Headcounts: Especially after breaks or moving from one area to another—always make sure the full group is accounted for. 

• Check-In Points: Use rest stops and meeting spots to regroup, update everyone, and address any concerns.

👚 Dress for the outdoors 

The right gear can prevent accidents before they happen. 

• Footwear: Everyone should wear comfortable, supportive shoes suitable for the terrain. 

• Layered Clothing: Weather can change quickly. Dress in layers and bring waterproofs just in case. 

• Sun Protection: Hats, sunglasses, and sunscreen are essential on sunnier days.

🌳 Encourage awareness of surroundings and group behaviour 

Being aware of our environment—and each other—is a big part of Scouting. 

• Environmental Awareness: Stick to trails, don’t disturb wildlife, and respect the area you’re in. 

• Group Dynamics: Encourage kindness, cooperation, and clear communication. A positive group is a safe group.

🏕️ Camp, cook and craft safely 

Many adventures lead to a campsite—so let’s make sure that space is safe too. 

• Safe Setups: Whether it’s a tent, a pioneering project, or a camp kitchen, make sure it’s set up away from hazards and checked regularly. 

• Fire Safety: Use fire pits or designated areas, never leave fires unattended, and always have a way to put them out nearby. 

• Tool Use: Make sure Scouts are briefed, supervised, and wearing the right gear when using any tools or equipment.

Stay alert, stay together 

Active adventures are where Scouting comes to life—from bonding over blisters on a hike to sharing marshmallows around the fire. By taking safety seriously, we make sure these moments can be enjoyed to the fullest.
