Surviving (and Thriving!) at Meggernie: A Weekend of Skills, Storms, and Scouts
Nestled in the heart of Glen Lyon, Perthshire, Meggernie Outdoor Centre offers a truly unique wilderness experience for Scouts of all ages. Surrounded by beautiful scenery, it’s the perfect setting for a huge variety of outdoor adventures—everything from survival skills and backwoods cooking, to archery and environmental exploration.
At a recent Survival Skills weekend, Scouts from across the country came together for an unforgettable experience. This event was just one of the many exciting activities that take place at Meggernie. Throughout the year, the centre also hosts fun-filled events like the Beaver Picnic, Parent and Cub Camp, and badge activity weekends. It’s a brilliant space for learning, exploring, and connecting with the wider Scouting community.

“As a relatively new Scout Volunteer, I booked 2 Scouts from our Troop onto the Survival Skills weekend at Meggernie.
Both Scouts had a great time, learning brilliant survival skills and meeting Scouts from other Troops. Their highlight from the weekend was building their own shelter, and spending all night surviving the Scottish weather (wind and rain).
They were both very tired after the camp, but returned to our meeting the following night to recommend the Survival Skills weekend to the rest of the Troop, and show them some of the things they had made, including a survival kit.
As a Leader I really enjoyed meeting lots of other very experienced Scout Leaders, and used the time to ask loads of questions, and try to learn as much as the Scouts! I would not have had the confidence to teach those skills to our Scouts before the camp, but now I’m planning to start teaching the rest of the Troop some of the skills.
I would recommend the Survival Skills weekend to any Scout, even if they’ve done some of the skills before. The Leader knowledge and advice was fantastic. Meeting up with the wider Scouting community was a bonus for the Scouts, and for myself.
Meggernie itself is such a beautiful location, and the kind welcome from Judith and Rab made the weekend very special.”

“The Survival Skills weekend was epic. I learned lots of new skills and also had fun. I had to share a tent with Scouts from another Troop, then we worked together to build our own survival shelter in the woods. We spent all night there, and had to cook our own food over fires.”
