Badges and Blethers: Running for Adventure
Running for Adventure: Spotlight on Clan Challenge Fundraisers
At Scouts Scotland, we believe every young person deserves the life-changing adventure of nights away. However, for many—especially in Scotland’s poorest communities—barriers like camp costs and a lack of local Scout groups stand in the way.
That’s where the Clan Challenge comes in—a mission to raise £25,025 in 2025 to help more young people experience Scouts. The funds will provide subsidies, expand access to new communities, and supply essential gear like tents and waterproofs, ensuring no one misses out on adventure.
Supporters are stepping up in incredible ways, taking on challenge events like marathons to raise vital funds. These inspiring individuals are going the extra mile—literally—to help young people discover the magic of Scouts.
In this edition of Badges and Blethers, we’re shining a spotlight on two of these dedicated fundraisers: Graham Matuszak, a Scout leader from Dunlop who rediscovered running later in life, and Eva O’Neill, a university student and Network Lead for the Highlands and Islands, who has grown up in Scouts and is passionate about giving back. Let’s hear their stories!
Meet Graham: From Couch to Marathon

Q: Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what inspired you to take on a running challenge?
“In 2023, I naively agreed to run the Manchester Marathon with my cousin. Before that, I was a total couch potato. But after completing the marathon—with a smile on my face!—and raising funds for a local charity, I was hooked. Think Forrest Gump, but on the west coast of Scotland.”
Q; Why did you choose to raise funds for Scouts Scotland?
“I’ve been involved in Scouting since 1986—from Beaver to Venture Scout. Six years ago, I became a Beaver Section Leader in Dunlop, a role I love. Scouting has given me so much, and fundraising through the marathon felt like a meaningful way to give back. I hope the money raised helps a young person somewhere in Scotland access all that Scouting offers.”
Q; How do you stay motivated during tough training runs?
“A good playlist, interesting audiobooks, and varied routes keep me going. Sometimes, the thought of a hot cup of tea and a biscuit waiting at home is all the motivation I need!”
Q; How are you raising funds?
“I’m promoting my run locally, at work, and through our Scout Group (23rd Ayrshire, Dunlop). Plus, my JustGiving page is live, and I’m hoping for a shout-out in the local press.”
Q; What are you most looking forward to on marathon day?
“Every year, I set up a ‘Cheer Station’ at my in-laws’ house along the route, complete with music and jelly babies. This year, I’ll be on the receiving end, which will be a real psychological boost.”
Q; And after the marathon?
“Simple things—a hug from family, an ice-cold can of Coke, and a Cadbury’s Starbar. I’m easily pleased!”
Meet Eva: Leading by Example
Q; Can you tell us a bit about yourself and what inspired you to take on a running challenge?
“I’m Eva, a 19-year-old university student studying adventure education. I’ve been in Scouts since I was five—starting as a Beaver and working my way through the sections. I’m now the Network Lead for the Highlands and Islands and thought this would be a great chance to make a wider impact and show what Scouts can do!”
Q; Why did you choose to raise funds for Scouts Scotland?
“Scouts has shaped who I am. I’ve had amazing experiences through Scouting and want to help others have those same opportunities.”
Q; How do you stay motivated during training?
“Music is my go-to when running or doing any physical activity. It keeps me moving and motivated.”
Q; How are you raising funds?
“Social media is a powerful tool. I’m using my reach on Facebook and Instagram to connect with both Scout and non-Scout friends.”
Q; How do you balance training and university life?
“I’m lucky to have a flexible schedule. My training isn’t always just running—I love climbing with friends and swimming, followed by a sauna after a long day.”
Q; Any advice for others considering a similar challenge?
“Go for it! You don’t have to be the best or the fastest. Keep smiling and enjoy the journey.”
Q; What are you most looking forward to on the big day?
“Being part of a big, colourful crowd—it’s going to be such a positive atmosphere!”
Q; And how will you celebrate after?
“I think just soaking in the atmosphere and spending time with friends and family who have supported me will be the perfect way to end the day.”
Q; Any final message for potential donors?
“Scouts has a unique and growing outreach. You can help by donating or volunteering your time. Fundraising is my way of giving back, and I’d love to see more people involved. Together, we can have a huge impact!”
